Well, as most of you will have read on the letters sent out at the end of the Summer Term, we are having a bit of a change around in September. Nursery and Reception will be working together as one big class which will be called the Early Years Unit. As a result, I decided we needed a new blog. Here is the link...

THANK YOU
The Nursery staff would just like to say thank you for all the lovely presents and cards we received at the end of term. There were some beautiful and very thoughtful presents. They were all very much appreciated.

Barnardo's Big Toddle
The Barnardo's Big Toddle is this Wednesday (18th June - not July as I put in a previous post! Thank you to the person who left the comment asking that question!! : ) Too many diary dates!!).
Please make sure your child has suitable footwear as we will be doing quite a lot of walking. They can come in fancy dress if they wish, but please consider the weather and make sure they are not going to be too hot/cold on the day. The toddle will be outdoors so they may need a waterproof coat. We will remain within the school grounds.
If you have any questions, please ask a member of staff.
We hope you will help us raise as much money as possible for this great cause.

Please don't forget that your child needs to wear school uniform on Wednesday for the photographs! If you wish to enter the Egg Decorating Competition, entries must be in school by Thursday lunchtime this week. They will be judged on Thursday after school and the winners announced in Celebration Assembly on Friday.

Hickory Dickory Dock & Mr. Wolf's Week
This week in Nursery our nursery rhyme is Hickory Dickory Dock and our story is called "Mr. Wolf's Week" by Colin Hawkins. The story is about Mr. Wolf and the activities he does each day. We will be talking about time this week, including days of the week, months of the year and the seasons.
We will be making a clock from a paper plate to help us when we sing the nursery rhyme. We will also be controlling our pencils to help the mouse to catch the cheese. As a group, we will make a big story map to show Mr. Wolf's week and we will be sequencing our Nursery day using photographs. In the outdoor area we will play lots of ring games, such as "Here we go Round the Mulberry Bush".
Clare will be in on Tuesday to tell us another story.
Ways to help at home this week
Talk about the days of the week and say them together. Talk about the things you do each day.
Look at the clocks and watches in your house. Do you have any unusual ones?

Billy's Bucket/Jack & Jill
This week our nursery rhyme is Jack & Jill. We are reading a story called "Billy's Bucket" by Kes Gray and Garry Parsons. The story is about a little boy who really wants a bucket for his birthday. He warns his parents to never, ever, ever use his bucket, but they don't listen...with disastrous consequences for their car! There are lots of buckets around the Nursery this week. See how many you can spot.
We will be finding out where water comes from and what it is used for as well as investigating ice and water. We will also be making some special watery pictures with powder paint.
In Magic Maths we will be doing lots of counting and filling buckets to see how many objects they can hold.
Clare will be in on Tuesday morning at 10.30 to tell us another story too!
Ways to help at home this week
Experiment with water and containers in the bath. Fill a larger container using a smaller one. How many will it take to fill the larger container?
Point out each time you use water during the day, e.g. to drink, to wash, to cook, etc.

Chinese New Year
First of all, apologies for the lack of a post last week! I don't have any excuse... I just forgot to do it!! Sorry! We were reading Little Lumpty and our nursery rhyme was Humpty Dumpty!
Anyway, this week we are having a slightly different week in Nursery. We are finding out about Chinese New Year. We will be reading the story of The Great Race. We will also be watching part of an episode of "Let's Celebrate" from CBeebies, showing a little girl getting ready for and celebrating Chinese New Year.
We will be making dragon masks, taking part in a Chinese Dragon Dance, making lai-see envelopes and trying Chinese food in our Chinese banquet on Wednesday. We will find out about lots of Chinese New Year traditions too. In the outdoor area we will be pretending to be fireworks and making our own Chinese Dragon from construction materials.
Clare from Debutots will be in on Tuesday morning to tell us another story.

Little Bo Peep
Our nursery rhymes this week have a sheep theme about them!! They are "Little Bo Peep", "Mary had a Little Lamb" and "Baa Baa Black Sheep". We are reading a Farmyard Tales story called "The Naughty Sheep" by Stephen Cartwright and Heather Amery.
We will be finding out about wool and its uses, helping Little Bo Peep find her lost sheep, using shaving foam to make "wool" for the sheep and choosing how we want to decorate our own paper sheep.
In Magic Maths we will be doing lots of counting this week and in Squiggle we will be moving on to a new squiggle - circles.
Ways to help at home this week
Make up lots of rhyming strings, e.g. cat, sat, pat, fat, hat, etc. They don't even need to be real words, as long as they rhyme! Please be aware that this is quite tricky for young children so it may take a lot of practise for your child to hear the rhyme. Don't worry if they can't get it straight away!

Cheap shaving foam, baby wipes, boxes of tissues, paper plates, cheap mashed potato and soap flakes.

Nursery Rhymes: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star
Welcome back! We hope you had a good Christmas & New Year!
This half term our theme is Nursery Rhymes. Each week we will look at one or two nursery rhymes and a story linked to them. This week we are looking at Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. Our story is by Oliver Jeffers and is called "How to Catch a Star".
We will be finding out about nocturnal animals, making sparkly stars, looking at reflections/shiny materials/light & dark and singing the nursery rhyme of course!
Ways to help at home this week
Go outside when it is dark and look at the stars, the moon, aeroplane lights, etc. What shapes can you see in the sky?
